What's in a Page Title?

A properly titled WEB page can do more for your getting your web page found than using META tags alone. Writing the perfect page title is easy once you learn the rules.

  • Page Title
A page title is just that - a page title. It is what the browser uses to record your page in the Bookmarks section, and what displays in the browser's title bar (at the top).

A page title cannot be longer than 64 characters (including spaces)
Why? Because the browser is set up to read only 64 characters. Putting more than this, will cause the bookmark section to trash the entries the next time it is accessed - erasing all of the entries, including yours - so what do you gain?

A page title should never contain only the words "Home Page"
Whose home page? Your company name should appear first. Descriptive phrases belong in the META tag section, which is covered later.

However, if you are a retailer or service provider, the title for your home page should contain a reference to your location and/or product or service ... such as ABC Realty - Cincinnati, OH Real Estate ... or ... ABC Company, your Widget Superstore in Cincinnati, OH.
    <title>Your Company Name - Location/Product Service </title>
Pages other than the home page, should have a reference to the page content in the title, such as Gotham Widgets - ABC Company ... or ... How to install Widgets - ABC Company.
    <title>Subject Reference - Your Company Name </title>
Why not put your company name first on sub pages?
Because only the first part of a long title will appear at the top of the browser and in the bookmark/favorite list. You want to remind your users why they chose this page in the first place. If they can't remember why they chose the page, they might delete it from the list without taking another look.
